ACMA extends licence areas 2AAA and 2TVR Tumut

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has decided to make channel capacity available to improve and extend coverage of the community radio service 2AAA Wagga Wagga and to extend the licence area of community radio service 2TVR Tumut.

‘ACMA is satisfied that the changes will allow more people in the Riverina region to enjoy the benefits of community radio,’ said Giles Tanner, General Manager of ACMA’s Inputs to Industry Division.

ACMA’s decision enlarges the 2AAA Wagga Wagga licence area and makes channel capacity available for translators to extend coverage of the service to the townships of Gundagai and Coolamon. New transmitters have also been planned to rectify signal deficiencies within 2AAA’s existing licence area at Wagga Wagga South and Junee.

The decision also increases the licence area of 2TVR Tumut and makes capacity available for translators that will enable 2TVR to extend its coverage to include the townships of Talbingo and Gundagai.

In making its decision, ACMA took into consideration the submissions it received in response to the draft licence area plan variation released in February 2006.

Bogus calls common place

Some weeks ago we wrote about the wide spread practice of bogus calls and segments to radio stations. At the time we were referring to the to cool for school unrealistic gotcha calls and totally unrealistic life experience calls you hear on any given day across many radio programs. Interesting article from The Adelaide Advertiser written by Kevin Naughton.

More importantly let us not lose sight of the fun that any form of radio can be and the enjoyment it might bring to the audience.

Bogus calls are not unique to the  breakfast gotcha calls we hear across the nation.  There are other forms of radio set ups that take place.

Quite often it may relate to a political spin that is being pushed although more often than not promotion of a product or service. (The late Hal Todd was a champion of this on late night radio in Melbourne.)

In regards to  the political spin it more often comes from a chain of callers ready to pounce on the line to project their  views on the listening audience.

Don Chipp gone at 81

Don Chipp passed away overnight in Melbourne. The former Liberal Politician who founded the Australian Democrat Party passed away after a long battle with parkinsons disease.

In the late 1980’s Chipp turned his hand to broadcasting, joining 3AK when it was part of Bond Media. He presented the morning talk program until the station was sold to business man Peter Corso.

Many of the current on air staff at 3AW were part of 3AK at the time including Ross Stevenson, Keith McGowan, Darren James and Bruce Mansfield to name a few.

It was during his time at 3AK that Chipp exploded one of the biggest myths of Australian Politics, that when he said he wanted to keep the bastards honest he was not referring to the politicians. The comment was actually aimed at the electorate.

Gary Pert heading to Nine?

Gary Pert head of Austereo’s Melbourne operations might be on the way to Channel Nine to fill the void left after the resignation of Melbourne operations GM Paul Waldren. Pert has been mentioned to replace Waldren as  has Cos Cardone, former AFL Footy Show producer and current head of light entertainment at Nine.

Gary Pert is a former Fitzroy and Collingwood AFL player who has also been suggested as the next Collingwood Football Club President when McGuire stands down from the role.McGuire needs to get a team on board that will work with him and deliver the results that the Nine powerhouse is used to.

Earleir this year Waldren turned down the offer to move to Sydney with Eddie McGuire and Waldren was then replaced as the networks National Sales Director.

Mr Waldren’s departure comes a month after figures were released showing Nine had lost $30 million in advertising revenue compared with the first six months of last year, leaving Seven within $2 million of the once-dominant network.

ACMA proposes increased availability 2RPH

The Australian Communications and Media Authority is proposing to increase the availability of the 2RPH community radio service in NSW.

ACMA is proposing to make two medium power FM frequencies available for 2RPH, one each at Newcastle and Wollongong plus an additional FM low power in-fill frequency at Kings Cross in Sydney. 2RPH already broadcasts on a high power AM frequency in Sydney (1224 kHz).

‘In proposing the changes, ACMA recognises the special nature of the community service provided by 2RPH to a wide range of people who are not able to access normal printed material,’ said Giles Tanner, General Manager of ACMA’s Inputs to Industry Division. ‘In this respect RPH is different to geographically-based community radio services.’

In developing its proposal, ACMA has had regard to the fact that it would reduce the availability of spectrum for special event broadcasting in Sydney and Newcastle. ACMA’s preliminary view is that this disadvantage is outweighed by the benefit of the spectrum being made available for the extension of 2RPH’s service. However, those involved in special events broadcasting are invited to make submissions on this aspect of the draft variation.

ACMA is also aware that there might be other demand for the spectrum that is proposed to be made available for 2RPH in the draft licence area plan variation. In particular, it would like to hear from any aspirant broadcaster that may be interested in providing a low powered local coverage service in Sydney using 100.5 MHz. An explanatory paper discusses the limitations associated with the use of this spectrum.

The proposal follows a submission from Radio for the Print Handicapped of NSW Co-operative Ltd, the licensee of 2RPH.

Magic calls the footy!

A touch of romance with the return of AFL Football to Magic 1278 today even though it was a once off. (or was it?)

Vale Ross Warneke

3AW’s Ross Warneke lost his battle with cancer last night. Warneke, 54, was the regular fill in presenter for Neil Mitchell as well a daily contributor with a television ratings segment each morning. Ross was also heard talking televison on various other Southern Cross stations around the nation.

Quite often when big stories around the nation and the globe were happening or breaking Neil Mitchell was on holidays and it was Ross who was in the chair doing the morning program. Port Arthur and Sept 11 are an example.

Away from the airwaves Ross Warneke was a longtime AGE journalist, writing a regular column in The Green Guide.

Commentators called on listeners to vote with their phones, attracting more than 2000 text messages from football fans around Australia.

AFL radio rights negotiations continue and the ABC fears its tight budget will restrict it in winning calling rights for high profile matches - or missing out completely. FULL STORY

3AW stands by Deano!

Despite Dean Jones being dropped by Ten Sports, a Dubai-based channel, for comments deemed racist 3AW have said his summer hosting role is safe at this stage.

Jones was apparently heard by viewers of the second Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa  say “the terrorist has got another wicket” when Hashim Amla took the catch that dismissed Kumar Sangakkara. He has  admitted making the comment and apologisedJones hosts the weekend Sports program on 3AW over summer. Program Director Clark Forbes said, He is still a, quote-unquote, required player. We wouldn’t be changing our contractual arrangements on that basis.”

It was not for the station to “think anything” about his comments, Forbes said.

“He’ll be signing a new contract shortly … what happened in Sri Lanka would not have any bearing on what he’ll be doing with us.”

Radio Ads to Ensure IR Messages Hit Home! (Listen Live here)

The ACTU and Australian unions have launched the next phase of the Your Rights at Work campaign with a series of radio ads aimed at highlighting the winners and losers in the new IR system, and the impact of the laws on young people and families.

The radio ads begin this week in every state, and across regional Australia. The ACTU’s TV ads will also continue to air on TV.

ACTU President Sharan Burrow said the Federal Government did not want the real impact of the laws open to scrutiny and challenge, but the union movement was committed to continuing to bring the impact of the laws to public attention.

Ms. Burrow said:”Since the IR laws were introduced earlier this year, working Australians have been subject to diminished protections from unfair dismissal and employers using the laws to cut workers pay and conditions.

“Working families are suffering and the impact of the laws will continue to grow, particularly as families battle with rising interest rates and petrol prices, and increases in health insurance and many household costs.”The unions are committed to continuing to bring these issues to the public.

“Working people continue to contact the ACTU describing their situation - that they are being pushed on to individual contacts, that wages are being cut, penalty rates are being stripped and overtime allowances are becoming a thing of the past.”

The radio ads describe legitimate scenarios - young families, workers in country areas, young people getting their first job and the push of big business”

They may be dramatic, but unfortunately accurately reflect that all the power rests with big business, with no negotiation and no protection for large numbers of employees

“The ACTU will continue to put pressure on the Howard Government until it rips up these unfair and harsh laws.”The advertisements will run on radio stations across the country.

Coonan warns - don’t shut out regional media!

Senator Coonan yesterday warned against “over-regulating regional [media] markets”, as this could “shut out regional media companies from the benefits of reform, which will damage their businesses and, ultimately, the services they deliver to their audiences”.

Her comments follow calls from Queensland Nationals, including MP Paul Neville and Senator Barnaby Joyce, to limit companies to owning two of the three traditional media platforms - television, radio or print - in regional areas. “The concept of quarantining some forms of media within a licence area while other forms of media are ubiquitous will become increasingly difficult to justify,” Senator Coonan said.

AUSTEREO’S nationally networked ‘personality’ Kyle Sandilands was taken off air yesterday after he called a gossip columnist, who is six-months pregnant, “fat”. In an unprovoked attack, Sandilands, of the Kyle and Jackie O Show, said the “chick that I hate at Sydney Confidential“, Fiona Connolly, is “fat” and a “liar”.

ABC’s Terry Lane victim of hoax

Former presenter and current ABC radio regular Terry Lane has admitted an article he wrote for The Sunday Age was infact based on a hoax video that had been circulating on the internet for months. Lane has offered his resignation to the newspaper’s editor.

Lane, who has been writing in the newspaper since it started in 1989 said in the article the Iraq war had killed “probably more than 100,000 innocents” and the Government should hold an inquiry into “the video evidence of US Army Ranger Jesse Macbeth”.

In the “video evidence”, which Lane instructs readers to find on Google Video, Macbeth says his orders were “to strike fear into the hearts of the Iraqis … the Geneva Convention doesn’t mean crap”.

The problem is Macbeth’s testimony is a hoax - and one that was debunked months ago by internet bloggers.

Lane offered to resign, and he told the Crikey newsletter that he had been guilty of the “unforgivable sin … of failing to check thefacts”.

“It came about like this. My attention was drawn to what looked like a professionally packaged documentary video in which US Ranger (I now know that that is bogus) Jesse Macbeth recounts his experiences as a soldier in Iraq, where he claimed to have served for 16 months,” Lane said.

“I was completely taken in by his fake sincerity. That, I suppose, could be excusable for any person with no responsibility to check bona fides, but in my case I fell for it because I wanted to believe it. That is inexcusable.”  (Sources Tattler, Crikey, The Australian.)

$100,000 PRIZE RADIO MUSIC STARS OF TOMORROW

The search for new and emerging Australian music talent is on again with the commercial radio industry announcing that the New Artist to Radio Showcase (NA2R), its annual event, aimed at unveiling the chart-toppers of tomorrow, will be held on October 13 in Sydney. The NA2R will be held in conjunction with the Australian Radio Conference and 2006 Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) at Luna Park.

Chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, Joan Warner, said this year the event would focus on unsigned Australian artists – acts that do not have a record deal but may or may not have an independent distribution deal.”

“This is a refinement of the criteria used in previous years which allowed both unsigned and signed artists to submit where the latter had not had significant airplay on commercial radio,” Ms Warner said.

This year for the first time ever the winner also receives a prize of $100,000 in radio advertising across the four major networks down the east coast of Australia. The advertising, run over two weeks, will be provided on Austereo, NOVA, Australian Radio Network and Macquarie Regional Radio network stations down the east coast of Australia in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Central Coast, Sydney and Melbourne.

“The radio industry wants to hear from artists and bands who have at least three songs ready to be played on commercial radio but who have not yet been signed by a record label,” Ms Warner said.

The submissions will be judged on commercial radio play potential by a panel of commercial radio network program and music directors.

Four acts will be selected from submissions by the program and music directors to play at the NA2R Showcase on Friday, October 13. The winner will be chosen at the Showcase event by a combination of the judging panel scores on the night and sms votes from the radio industry audience present at the event. The winner will be then invited to perform the following evening at the ACRAs in front of 850 Australian radio industry executives and on-air presenters.

Ms Warner said unearthing new talent has always been one of the key roles played by commercial radio in Australia and was one of the ways in which the commercial radio industry supported Australian music and artists.

“This is an industry-wide initiative which has helped launched some very successful music careers in the four years it has been operating including artists like Delta Goodrem, Kid Courageous,Sarah Blasko, Nessa Morgan, Thirsty Merc, Jade Macrae and last year’s winner Figgkidd.

“The commercial radio industry is committed to encouraging the development of Australian music and NA2R provides an important and innovative way of opening the door for emerging Australian artists to be showcase to the decision makers in the commercial radio industry.”  View PDF

Saturday, August 26, 2006 | 0 comments »

Former Southern Cross boss and 3AW caller Shane Healy with former Magic 693 and current 6PR caller Smokey Dawson covered the game nobody else wanted to call. 6PR’s Brad Hardie provided special comments throughout the match. Magic opened up the lines after the game returning to Music from 5.00pm

The clash between Hawthorn and The Kangaroos from Launceston saw the Hawkes get up and win.

Sunday, August 6, 2006 | 0 comments »

Friday, August 4, 2006 | 0 comments »

ABC’s Terry Lane victim of hoax

Tuesday, August 1, 2006 | 0 comments »
